The area MidCentral District Health Board has responsibility for includes:
Palmerston North is the major city of about 75,000 people in the Manawatu region. It is situated beside the Manawatu River, and close to the Tararua Ranges. Palmerston North is a major university city, with a strong rural hinterland and associated exporting businesses. The city is at the hub of major routes to central North Island ski fields, and outdoor activities including fishing, tramping, hunting and river adventures. It is within a few hours easy drive of the capital city, Wellington; the tourist and winegrowing region of Hawke’s Bay; and, to the west, the cities of Wanganui and New Plymouth. Palmerston North Hospital is the main regional hospital in the MidCentral district and provides a mixture of secondary and tertiary health services. Despite the large geographical catchment area the hospital covers, Palmerston North provides good access to all main centres. The hospital provides free parking and great on-site library facilities. Travelling time to work is minimal, with most employees living within a 10 minute drive from work. MidCentral District Health Board has recently made a change so that all nurses now report through a “nursing” structure to the Director of Nursing.
