Process for applying for a work permit/visa If you are not a New Zealand or Australian citizen or permanent resident you will need to obtain a work permit to be eligible to work in New Zealand. A work permit allows you to live and work in New Zealand for a restricted length of time. If you intend to return home for a holiday or to travel overseas and return to New Zealand before your work permit expires you will need to apply for a multiple entry work visa. If you are 18 to 30 years of age you could be eligible to apply under the Working Holiday scheme. However, it is more likely that you will be applying for a work permit as a result of being made a job offer. If this is the case it is recommended that you apply for a work permit under the skilled stream – general work (occupational shortage). It can take up to 9 months to process an application for permanent residency. It is recommended that you initially apply for a work permit/visa so that you are available to take up a position as soon as possible. This will not affect your ability to apply for permanent residency once in New Zealand and you and your family have had a chance to decide that you would like to live in New Zealand on an ongoing basis. In most cases you will need to obtain New Zealand Nursing Council Registration before applying for a work permit/visa. To obtain work permit/visa forms or to find more information about New Zealand Immigration processes please visit www.immigration.govt.nz Process for Obtaining Nursing Council Registration Any offer of employment made will be conditional on you having obtained Nursing Council Registration and holding a current Annual Practising Certificate. To obtain Nursing Council Registration you will be required to demonstrate that you have an equivalent international nursing qualification, are competent to practice within your scope of practise and that you are fit for registration, including the ability to communicate in and comprehend English. The length of time it takes the Nursing Council to process your application for Registration varies greatly depending on how straightforward it is for the Council to assess your application against the above criteria. However, it can take anywhere from a few weeks to a couple of months. It is strongly recommended that you obtain Nursing Council Registration before applying for a specific vacancy to avoid the disappointment of missing out on your dream job. |
