Wanganui city is located on the West Coast of the North Island at the mouth of the Whanganui River. Restoration of Wanganui’s heritage streets and buildings have lead to the revitalisation of one of New Zealand’s oldest cities. The central city shopping area is lined with gas-lights, wrought iron garden seats, palm trees and wide paved footpaths which create the beauty of Wanganui’s main street. Cafes, pubs, speciality shops, and an art deco cinema all add to the city’s attraction. The Wanganui region takes its name from the Whanganui River which flows through it. Wanganui is the principle town in the region. Wanganui is within easy driving distance of Tongariro National Park and Mt Ruapehu, the North Island’s highest peak and principal skiing ground. In addition to winter sport, Tongariro National Park offers exhilarating scenery and a variety of walks and tramps. The city also boasts excellent sporting facilities and Wanganui has an international reputation as one of the finest sports training regions in the world. Whanganui District Health Board provides health services to a community of around 68,000 people. Wanganui Hospital is the main secondary level healthcare provider in the Wanganui region. We are the largest employer in Wanganui with staff totaling about 1,000. A wealth of knowledge can be gained from working in hospitals based in rural city communities. Working in a supportive “care pair” nursing environment our preceptors will ensure that you are socialised into hospital work life and our friendly Nurses are keen to share their knowledge with colleagues and students. We have modern, wide electric beds and you will find the latest monitoring equipment in our Theatres, ICU and Emergency Department. Profile Alex (Community Mental Health Nurse) and Julie Loggie (Registered Nurse – Post Anaesthetic Care Unit) and their two children moved from England to Wanganui in January 2005. “Wanganui has a friendly, family orientated outdoor lifestyle, and it is really easy to access a diverse variety of activities. The centrality of Wanganui also helps with this. We have particularly enjoyed canoeing down the Whanganui River which was excellent…the tramping is good with a range of grades from novice to expert. Anything outdoors is pretty much second to none.” The sports facilities are particularly good here…the kids are into soccer, judo, netball, gymnastics and swimming. Again, the range of sporting activities and the ease of their access are impressive.” “In respect of the housing on offer in Wanganui…we are living on a fifteen acre property which is minutes from town. We couldn’t do that in the UK and this is an aspect of life here that is fantastic.” “We are really happy to have made the decision to come to New Zealand the kids like it here, they have settled in really well and don’t want to go back.” Visit the Whanganui DHB website: http://www.wdhb.org.nz …or, for more information on Wanganui, visit these websites:
